My name is Ben. I am German and work under the name anotherclay. I make ceramic pieces. Right now I live in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and work mostly online.

Before clay I studied jazz saxophone and flute at a music university in Germany, later with a Berklee trained musician in Israel and with a teacher in New York City. Next to that I started teaching a foreign language, and I am still doing that today, mostly online. I moved to Berlin, painted large abstract works, and then made music videos until my days were full of cameras, editing and export bars.

Clay started with a four hour pottery crash course in Chiang Mai. Back in Vienna I set up a tiny rooftop studio with a wheel and a small kiln and just kept working: one more cylinder, one more vase, one more test. This week I moved back to Chiang Mai, where that first class happened.

In clay I want to go further. I like tall, slim vases with small bottoms, wide bellies and delicate flared necks, and very flat teapots that sit or lie low on the table. I enjoy good glazes, but I like the feel of smooth, raw clay even more, so I often keep the outside unglazed. I want to explore more extreme forms, buy a wheel here in Thailand, give masterclasses in different countries and slowly learn more about the local language, people and art.

On 22 November at 20:00 CET my online shop will open. The pieces there are one small part of this work so far. I will keep teaching, keep throwing and keep trying to make the next piece a little better than the last one.
